Having renewed white amalgamating tape several times where used to tape up the pvc sort of stanchion caps through which the top guardwire passes I am looking for a tape that won't attract/hold dirt in quite the same way .has anyone found such a beast ,perhaps smooth surface like electricians tape but with a better and durable bond.

I don't have a need for tape nowadays but I used to use self-amalgamating tape and regarded it as a regular mainenance item, Vinyl tape goes brittle in the sun and doesn't last nearly as long. If you use black tape you won't notice the dirt. ;)

Black PVC insulating tape is reasonably durable and UV resistant.

I tape things up with the black tape and then cover with white .... UV destroys the adhesive on white tape so needs replacing every year but the black tape lasts forever.. ( Spreader end caps rather than stanchion caps in my case)

ITYWF that black self-amalgamating tape is also unaffected by UV.

Plastic dipping, but the hoist fees to invert the boat may preclude this...

Having said that it may be possible to quite easily remove stanchions, wire and all to do this.

Also they now do the stuff in a paint-like formulation called Plastidip, if I am not getting the wrong end of the stick.

You could try silicone, non-adhesive, compression tape. Sometimes called emergency tape, one maker is Mocap, there are many others. I've used it on turnbuckles and spreader tips and for waterproofing electrical connectors. One great benefit is, when you want to remove it, you just cut it off and it leaves no sticky residue.
