I just moved over to the other platform, when walking along the joining bridges, I looked at this BIG rig support vessel, I could see the props, twin props, but they were also duoprops, (contra rotating) I didn't know until then, that they had been used in commercial ships, they are huge, 7 feet approx in diameter, if not more! I can see the point, in eliminating prop walk etc, but these arfe bloody huge! Just thought I would share that with you, do jetskis use contra rotating turbines? I dont think these are wolwo ones!!

There was also a spitfire derivative with contra rotating props. I saw gannets flying, they were still in use not many years ago, as spotters, for more sophiticated aircraft, a bit like they use the old phantoms for now, "wild weasels" I think they call the old phantoms, jamming radar and all that guff.

I think by spitire deriive you mean Martin Baker MB5, built by the same outfit who build the ejector seats, that looked like a late model spit and had a RR Griffon engine with contra rotating props. A very good design, shame that the jet came in and sole its thunder.
The reason was that engine output began to exceed prop technology at the time, hence contra rotating pairs. I believe the gannet was twin engined and one engine could be shut down whilst in cruise to reduce fuel consumption. It was also an Early warning aircraft and some form of early warning would have considerably reduced our losses in the Falklands.

I think the later seafires (fleet air arm) also had contra rotating props, the griffon, was just a bigger bore merlin, with a few other mods, wonderful engine!! But in the later seafires and the MB5 as the very late spitfires, had a squarer wing, with clipped tips, to allow higher speeds, the beautiful assymetric wing shape and manouverability had gone! To be ressurrected for sail shapes and mast bends later!

Fairey Aviation

The Gannet was built by Fairey Aviation and yes, it did have duo props.

Fairey Aviation, yep, you guessed, part of the same group as Fairey Marine.....

For sale, 1970 Triumph Spitfire-sold, 1947 Lambretta, 1922 Great grandmother, PM for details.
