I have a boat fitted with Volvo 290 DP-E drives. The props are 3 years old and in what I thought good condition with some slight pitting on the blades. The anodes have been changed regularly during the three years when they have been eroded to about 50%.
A few weeks ago I had a blade break off the rear 4 bladed prop of the pair with no other apparent damage. The engineer that looked at the boat said I must have hit something and fitted a new set. This weekend exactly the same thing has happened with the set on the other drive.
I am really dubious it is due to hitting anything. In both cases I was travelling ahead, the first case accelerating, the other at about 15 knots. I can’t believe something has passed cleanly through the front set of blades to strike the rear set with enough force to totally break off the blade.
Has anyone lese experienced anything like this
