Morning all.

I have a sealine 365 fitted with dp290 drives. I have taken off the drive for servicing etc. The intermediate housing that the top bellows fits to is damaged.(part no 3855772 on marine parts europe) I suspect a failed bearing inside the jackshaft assembly . I am looking for advice on how to replace the intermediate housing. Do I take off the transom shield or do I need to move the engine forward by opening the flywheel housing and tackle it that way?
Any advice would be appreciated
Thank you

I think the housing your refering too is part of the bellhousing itself
I'm assuming its the housing which carries the splined shaft that the uj fits over when the drive is installed?
If so then to access it you will first have to either move the engine forward or remove it from the boat to unbolt the bellhousing from the engine
the rear of the engine is supported by the bolts with lock tabs spaced around the outside of the housing where the bellows fits on once the bolts are removed there is an aluminium cone sealing onto rubber doughnuts within the transom shield
good luck!

It has been hit by the uj as the uj is spinning causing part of the casting to break. A few ball bearings were inside the top gaiter when I took it off leading me to suspect the roller bearing (s)between drive and engine.I believe that is called the jackshaft

Yes the whole bellhousing [called a flywheel cover in Volvo parlance] complete with jack shaft will need to come off to repair the bearing. Probably easiest to lift the whole engine out. Those bearigs can let go with catastrophic consequences if they get seawater in them, hopefully you have been lucky.

Thanks, I will attack it tomorrow, I decided for a change to lift out and work on the boat in June.I am enjoying it in the North Wales sunshine.

What lurks within :)

This is a aqd41 ???
The shagged bearings are from my 280 outdrives but suspect yours will not be much different.
In my case the outdrives had to be removed AND the engine shifted to get at both jack shaft bearings out. One from each side ,dead clever design eh !.Rumour is that mine were easy peasy compared to 290s.:)
The bearings are bog standard buy anywhere for a few quid bearings,if you not want to pay Vilvo prices
From distant memory my neighbour in the automatic gearbox place next to me gottem within 24 hours for about 25.00 quid the pair.Just needed part number stamped on casing.:)
PPS.Check for corrosion on top of cow horn where rubber pipe from turbo clamps on to it.
If really knackered you can buy a cheap repair kit to avoid having to replace priced as though made of sold gold cowhorn.:)

We just moved ours forward enough to get jackshaft out. The bearings can be drifted out with a bit of hard wood if you do not have the correct tool.
One other bodgers tip,if for any reason the outer race bearing has perhaps seized on shaft and its turning in the transom assembly, you can peen or roughen the new bearing outer casing with a centre punch, which with some Loctite will save you a fortune and downtime by not having to buy new housing or have it built up and reprofiled.
Suspect as yours is fairly new this should not occur.

you aint gonna pean or roughen a bearing outer race it'll shatter first due to the hardness do not try this! you can do it with a shaft or housing but not the bearing itself
try this and you'll be buying another bearing for sure

Oops

Sorry for that .You are of course absolutely 100% correct.
It was the shaft and housing that was peened.

Sigh.....I do so miss the joys of outdrives.
The sheer excitement of wondering which bits were going to empty my bank account next or merely remove the skin from my knuckles.
Plus all those days sitting on the shore surrounded by bits of aluminium and puddles of oil watching all the shaft drive boats go merrily on their way
Happy days. :):):).

Everything stripped, both bearings and seals knackered. Flywheel cover damaged at uj end aft of where the upper gaiter is jubilee clipped. May be able to repair but if anyone knows where to obtain one please let me know.

Thanks everyone for help and advice.

Coastal Rides in Dover will be your best bet for secondhand bits. A look at Ebay also can produce some suprising results.
Do hope you get it sorted quickly. Absolutely nothing quite as peeving as watching the weather girl give a sunny weekend forecast as you sit on the phone with with gritted teeth and a list of bits you need to get your boat moving again.

I agree with oldgit, needed similar parts myself, got them from Paul at Coastal Rides, 01304 201073
