As the diesel in Avocet's tank has been there for the best part of 10 years, I thought I might treat it to some fresh stuff! Can anyone foresee a problem in me dumping the old diesel into our central heating kerosene tank? (It'll be no more than 8 or 9 gallons of diesel into a few hundred of kerosene). It's mostly road diesel, not red - if that makes any difference?

From experience, it could soot your boiler up a bit, if you know how to adjust the air control you could tweak the boiler a little bit, you may have to clean the flame detector photocell up. In the quantities your talking about I don't see an issue.

I have done and no problems so far...... I reckon there is years of s@@t in the bottom of the oil tank in the garden at home, so it will be able to cope you a little extra from the boat tank !!

Assuming it's a pressure jet boiler you will not even know you have it in there, for peace of mind you could add it over time if that makes you feel better. You will notice any contamination when you decant it and you can always treat it and of filter it too.

Thanks all. Got 7 gallons out. Looked really clear - even right at the end when it ran out. Put 2 in Mrs Avocet's car and the rest in the heating tank.

Ohhhh - Lovely Didn'I larf -

A lot of bother about possibly damaging your home boiler (though if you've got an ebersplutter - I'd understand),

THEN, you go and dump some in The Management's car (which is a much more sensitive bit of kit).

It appealed to my sense of the ridiculous.

Good on yer.

I hope you paid the duty on the fuel you put in Mrs. Avocet's car....
LOL! More like I should have claimed the duty BACK on the stuff I put in the heating tank! It's all road diesel anyway. There may be traces of red if that's what the previous owner of the boat used, but in the 20 years we've had the boat, we've used so little fuel that I've just chucked the odd gallon of road diesel in there as and when.

You don't think I'd have risked it in MY car do you?! (I'm just waiting to see if she makes it back from work this evening...)
