What's dumb is the fact that I have to ask it, having downloaded the manual, which doesn't mention it. I presume it's because I have the Mk 1 and the manual's for the Mk2.

What does the orange wire on a Nasa Clipper depth sounder do? The manual says:
red: +ve supply
Black -ve supply
Green - alarm

(The +ve alarm connects to +ve supply)

So:
Orange ??????

You are correct . You have a mk1 version.
Connect the black wire to supply negative.
Connect the red wire to supply positive
Connect the orange wire to supply positive to get the backlighting on. (You can connect this through a switch so you can turn the backlight off in the daytime.)
You should also have a small bleeper unit. Connect the red wire from the bleeper to the supply positive and the black wire from the bleeper to the green wire from the sounder. ( If you haven't got the bleeper talk to nasa they are nice people. )
