Dumb question

At Yarmouth IOW. over the weekend we saw two identical Bavarias, rafted out side by side.
As we sat on the poop deck carrying out important research into the question of whether gin and tonic prevents malaria ( It does)
another important observation was made but we were unable to form a conclusion
Both boats were identical and both had identical anemometers on the top of the masts, which were side by side. One anemometer cup array was turning twice as fast as the other in the same wind ...
does that mean that the boat will sail twice as fast as well?

Presumably it means that one particular make of wind instrument is twice/half as good as the other?

Absolutely. I have had a super high-speed one fitted to my Bavaria so SWMBO can do a bit of water skiing.

and i've stuck some glue on mine, so that whenever SWMBO looks, its never more than 11kts, and usually a southerly.....

Is it not possible that the mast on one boat was sheltering wind from the other, causing it not to spin as quick?

Might have been the gin. Are you sure there were two boats?

Sound simple enough to me. The wind was blowing twice as hard over one boat than it was over the other. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
