Hi guys

We have a technical question if anybody has come across this or knows about paint compatibility, this would help us a lot.

Our 33-year-old, Dufour 35 is looking tired in places and needs a bit of filler, especially in the cockpit. As of most boats of this era, white decks were unheard of and our grey / green decks are not a colour of gel filler that is available.

So my plan is…..

As agreed with a local paint shop in Gibraltar: to take a can of Toplac along to the shop and a locker lid for colour matching and get them to squirt the inks from their colour match Dulux paint mix service into my can of white boat paint.

This will allow us to roughly match our deck colour. We can then fill the damage with epoxy filler and then re-paint and blend in with the deck allowing a reasonably tidy repair.

Does anybody know if a reaction will occur between the standard white spirit based colour mix colours and the Toplac ???

Any advice would be gratefully received.

I did exactly this with international deck paint...had a tin of white.. and wanted light grey. It worked perfectly. Toplac is a an alkyd based paint, like most oil based paints nowadays,so you should not have a problem. The tints that Dulux use in their tinting machines work in oil and water based paints,so reckon will work in any base.Your biggest problem will be trying to get a match for your colour. they have a gizmo which claims to do an automatic match to any material, but nothing beats the mk 1 eyeball. PS mix it in very very thoroughly, the "can shaker" that they use is useless, all the tint sticks to the lid and under the rim.

The Duluxe system will only find the nearest colour that it has saved in its memory. If you have access to a Crown system or an AKZO system then these will make up a formulation to match the original

That's true ,but the Dulux system has a helluva big memory!!he only wants to roughly match the colour...it will give as close a match as makes no difference.
