AT vast expense I bought a tin of Tiger antifouling and applied it in the normal way. When she dried out a couple of months later I noticed the bottom was discoloured from the original white to a rough grey colour. On inspection this grey turned out to be millions of baby barnacles. I did not panic as I was about to spend a few weeks in fresh water and assumed this would kill the little blighters.
Anyone else had the same problem this year? Any views on what went wrong?

It all depends on where you moor the boat.Drying moorings can be a problem due to a thin film of mud sticking to the antifoul giving a barrier which the barnacles can live on.

Also some areas are more prone to fouling than others.

In any case antifoul has been much weakened by antipollution laws forbidding some of the active ingredients.

I know some people who use gloss paint on the bottom and dry out for a scrub off 2 or 3 times a season. The logic being that modern antifoul is not much better and costs twice as much.
