one chap has put chine runners on his duck punt

reckons it helps it to go to windward

I tried adding spray rails to my trimaran to increase the possiblity of planing. Test were inconclusive as the mast step broke and by the time I'd made a steel ring frame and tried it the summer was over.
I sold it and wish I hadn't really. I saw it on ebay later on but didn't bid. I wonder if it's still out there?

What about a keel and moulding a V into the hull, and how about fitting a rudder while you are at it!

good plan....

like it we could add mast with shrouds, bouyancy tanks, widen it a bit, lengthen it a bit, put a transome on it, a cabin, an inboard engine, v berth, heads, galley and call it a yacht

or we could build two of them and call it a cat

it might take a bit longer than 16 hours to build it of course and cost a bit more in materials

as it happens I am very happy with the windward performance of mine

not much different

I'd be vary wary about the increased draft as each gust heals you over, er rather counters the thin water ethos all IMHO.

the bilge runners are only a couple of inches wide

they are supposed to just improve the chine effect when heeled

so they might make an inch of difference to the draft

however, the punt works fine for me

Wings don't look like they would be that effective. How about a pivoting leeboard so you can have a proper plate down when its deep enough and raise it in the shallows or when you don't want the drag. As the duck punt is so narrow one board would do.

well...

I think the whole idea is the work of the devil

the god of simplicity will smite you down for considering fiddling with a design that is simplicity itself

actually the punts go fine to windward if you just heal them a bit

when I built mine I did not beleive that it would work and was considering some retro-fit foofarraw gismos to improve it

but Gavin Atkin said leave well alone

blokes have been sailing these things for a couple of hundred years

and you know....

he was dead right

the chine and the paddle offer more than enough bite

no worries

by the way lads.... did I mention?

build a duck punt - the best fun an old bloke can have.... supine

Dylan, am I right that these Duck Punts are built with WBP ply? I would be interested to know what the grade marking are on yours /anyone else's plywood as WBP seems to be a bit of a broad church and I'm sure some of it is unsuitable for getting wet!

no sweat - it spends 99 per cent of its life hanging in a nice dry garage

and I can always build another one or replace the bits that rot
