Off to Croatia in 10 days time, cruising out of Dubrovnik.
I'm so used to getting cash from ATMs overseas that I've not given a thought to dealing with cash out there.
Can anyone pass on any experience of this? Are ATMs plentiful, do restaurants take Credit Cards, are travellers cheques the better option?
Any advice will be well received.

Just got back from my 2nd fortnight in the same area.

(a) yes, ATMs are plentiful - it's the standard way to get cash out there; in my experience all but the smallest places seem to have one within 10 mins walk of the quay/marina, they're all multi-lingual, charge 1.5% and are limited to 1600 Kuna (~£150) at a time;

(b) only the biggest/poshest shops, bars & restaurants can be relied on to take plastic - check first;

(c) Travellers Cheques? How quaint! Seriously, I've never known anyone try them in Croatia - I suspect it could be difficult to find anywhere other than banks that even knows what they are.

I am a nobody.
Therefore I am perfect. /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

To back up what beachbum said, when I was there I used plastic in ATMs to get cash, and paid for things with that. Easy to find and cash usually accepted everywhere. I don't remember there being an ATM limit, but then being a tightwad I wasn't withdrawing that much anyway. I'm sure bb is right.

Watch out for the salty bottled water. Yuck.

Have a great time - we were there last week, hot but good enough winds on half our days and then big firework display in Dubrovnik on the Saturday night which was most spectacular

Credit cards were not accepted anywhere with us including the marina restaurant
