I have to bring a 44 foot steel ketch long keeler back from Dublin to its new home port of Bristol and was wondering if anyone out there has done the trip before and had any advice on the ports to use and ports to avoid.

Whether to stay on the "Irish side"or the "welsh side" ETC ETC all information gratefully received

Ian

It all depends on wether you are on holiday and wish to visit lots of places and take it easy or if you are just wanting to get from A-B .

Once you get into the Bristol Channel Milford Haven offers good shelter and a choice of anchorages and 2 marinas.

The next port of call could be Swansea With anchoring off mumbles or into the large marina.

From here on up you need to work the tides ,leave Swansea a few hours before low water to get the maximum push from the next flood tide.

Depending on your speed etc depends on where you fetch up next. All things being favourable Bristol is possible but you need to lock in before HW and its 7 miles up the river Avon from Avonmouth. So if you dont quite make it early enough ,Portishead Marina is a good bet. Then enter the river after half tide on the next flood tide.

Barry looks like a good port of call but in fact there is little room to anchor ,the yacht club moorings are all for smaller boats than yours and its not sheltered from any Southerly or easterly wind.Better to make for Cardiff and lock into the Barrage using the marina inside the Barrage.

You can leave Cardiff Early on the tide and carry the flood up to Bristol. You should call Avonmouth Radio on channel 12 as you pass the welsh hook buoy ask them to inform Bristol City Docks you are coming.

Graham has given you the info for the Bristol channel end of the journey. However remember to allow enough time to enter and leave the locks at Swansea.

As for the journey down to to Milford Haven, the actual route depends on how far you want travel down the Irish or Welsh coast. For the Irish side try Wicklow or Arklow then Wexford, Rosslare or Kilmore quay around the corner. Then cross to Milford Haven where theres lots of moorings and 2 marinas.

Or Welsh coast, cross to Holyhead, then Pwlheli, Fishguard and then Milford.

Thanks for that,
Im not planning on doing any sight seeing just making the journey as quick as possible so not concerned with pretty marinas or anchorages, just need to get this boat upto Bristol if the sale proceeds.

I would treat Wexford as an absolute last resort in any kind of weather especially easterlies, if you have any kind of draft. It is a rather interesting entrance, if anyone is planning always go around hw slack is my advice.

It is, if you can go a great place to visit, and on any Irish cruse a shame to miss, but when the pilot says 'Entry is difficult also for boats drawing more than 1.5m. The sandbanks on and adjacent to the bar are subject to constant change and the entrance is now S of its previous position.'

We crossed in an E F6 and had 1ft of water under the keels in the troughs of the waves, we only draw 2ft 6 so you can see the problems.

Just thought I would mention it.

Might well need crew for the trip, we are over in Ireland this weekend looking her over and visiting the outlaws and if all goes well on the survey bringing it back in May/June..ish to bring it back( more likely June as got lots of RYA/Lifeboat stuff on in May), I didnt think you were into sailing ?

This thing will probably max out at 7 knots even in one of your F12's and besides that bright orange romper suit of yours clashes with my green topsides. :~)

My dear chap - you know I'm game for anything on the water. And a nice sail would not go amiss!! After all, in new role with QHM "raggie" knowledge wll not go wasted As to the orange romper suit, I promise I'll not bring it this trip. Heaven forfend I'd clash with your green topsides! Any way, lime green and orange don't clash! They are complementary! /forums/images/icons/wink.gif
