DSC VHF second hand

Hi I have acquired a DSC VHF but as it has been loaded with a user MMSI I need it changing or at least removing, so as to enter my own MMSI any body had any experience of this problem yet.

I took mine back to Simrad and they sorted it out for me - no charge.

Usually memory has to be wiped by suitably equiped engineer. If the seller didn't point this out to you then your radio could well be stolen property and thus legally not yours.

I can see this causing endless problems in years to come - even with the legally transferred sets, not all will be re numbered. I bought a Simrad52 handheld - the shop couldnt program it, and so it still sits in it's cradle without an ID - but works fine.

The Uniden has been binned, thanks to this forum I have not installed it and will continue useing the ICOM, I liked the idea of the radio Mic meant I could use the radio from anywhere on board shame nobody else seems to make a radio with one.

I don't want to seem argumentative but I find it hard to believe that the staff at the shop where you bought it were not able to programme a "mobile" MMSI number into the set! Assuming, of course, that you had a Ship Radio licence and had applied for the mobile variant MMSI for the radio.

We went to a hell of a lot of trouble working with Simrad and the MCA to first allow the things into use and then to ensure that they were properly identified, to the Coastguard's satisfaction. This included a lot of info being fed out to chandlers about how it all worked.

If it still doesn't have its "mobile" MMSI number programmed into it you should contact Simrad direct.

To be fair they were prepared to send it away to be programmed, but at the time I purchased it I was unaware that I couldnt program the number myself. When I went back, shop didnt posess the required kit to do the programming (as they had had discontinued stocking the 52). As it was primarily a backup radio for locks and harbour work, I never bothered getting it programmed. Not sure whether I shall bother with a DSC version for the new boat, just get a really small and pocketable item. The main radio is to be DSC again.
