After just short of 30 years as an Auxiliary Coastguard I can assure you that there will still be Dudes listening on 16. Even if listening watch were officially done away with. Evince Morse Code, long gone, but put an Mayday on it at there wil be people who pick it up. Many Auxiliaries own their own VHF units. Any way as stated, open speaker watch is still maintained.

surely it is a good idea?

having read many of you complaining about the amount of radio chatter, and annoying radio checks to the coastgaurd particularly in the Solent area, you would welcome DSC as it alleviates a lot of voice calls, so in theory everything should become quieter???
