I have a Midland DSC radio connected to a Furuno GPS. Both units perform flawlessly, normally, but when the engine is run, the radio loses its position signal. I think it's still polling for position, but perhaps the GPS ceases to output position via NMEA. The units are both installed at the chart table well away from the engine and it's charging circuits.

If both units are switched off and left for 10-15 mins, the radio will get its position as normal when both are switched back on, as long as the engine is off. However, this is no good when under way!

Any idea?

This could be due to RF interference being picked up from a DC circuit. It might be worth seeing what happens if you make a temporary run of NMEA cable from the GPS to radio that is out in the open well away from any other runs of wire and see if it works and then install it in its own run . You are using shielded cable????

It is possible the alternator is causing the problem and this can sometimes be solved by putting a capacitor on the alternator output. These are usually available in Halfords audio department.

Not using shielded cable, just the cables that came with the radio and gps.

Good point re capacitor; will look one up and give it a try.

Many thanks
