From time to time, my vhf radio tingles very loudly. It turns out that this is a DSC call, according to the lights. But i haven't given my number to anyone, so i reckon it must be a spam call, or a loonie, and I press the reject or whatever the naff off button is. Does anyone else get these calls? Or er should i do something else? What?

Re: hm

rightyho, then what? The whole boat makes tingly ringy noises, cos it is connected into the amplifiers and speakers, it seems. Do i lift the thing up? the receiver on the dsc course had a nice big display thingy to read what was going on. This is all a bit confusing i must say - and dsc is sposed to be New and Improved innit...

Re: hm

On yours, if you lift it up it will cancel the alert but it won't go to the working channel selected by the other person. You need to press the -> a few times to scroll through the info until you get the "ACKN" screen where you press up or down to acknowledge or choose to ignore them. It is possible to "soft patch" it out of the speaker system if you want.

Nuisance calls

At the risk of sounding Brendan-ish, you can ascertain anybody's DSC number by looking it up on A Certain Internet Database. Evidently, there are numerous Solent-based gits on here doing just that, in order to plague you with junk calls offering dodgy insurance, time shares and exciting new c*pp*r ant*f**l products...

Re: DSC calls

Under the doing something else option of your question, to achieve a DSC operator's license, you would need the knowledge to answer your own question. I thus suggest you aim to get an appropriate operator's license for your equipment. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
