Specifically Oceanis 350, I have heard that the boat can balance on the wing, after accidental grounding, is it worth making legs, or make the boat lie over ? Any experience/thoughts on this, as I'm not keen to have a ' balancing ' experience ! Thanks.

You're going to dry out at one heck of an angle if you heel over on firm ground. Worst-case is balancing on a wing until the water goes out and then falling over. The answer must be - don't.

I dry out regularly with my B 331 and wing keel. My boat has twin rudders with 'shoes' to protect 'em from sharp edges of say rocks. Is that the same with yours?

As with taking the bottom with any boat it's best to know the nature of the bottom, and to go for firm and flat. Failing that take advice from a local.

Mine has been fine on sand and shingle. I misjudged the position of a creek bottom once and the boat eventually settled at a strange angle but remained stable.

What I've yet to try is soft mud. I'm kinda nervous as to what might happen. I might leave that to you and read your report before I give it a try! /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Happy grounding.

I have the Jeanneau with an almost identical setup. I ground out regularly both on firm beach and soft mud. No problems so far after 2 years.
The rudder boots split though and are (gulp!) 70 quid each.

Ah, I see, well the 331 has a centre plate. With the plate raised she draws 0.9m.

Best thing is to give it a try first on firm flat bottom, see how you feel after that.

Just out of curiosity what happens to a modern fin keel yacht if it runs aground and the water disappears? Will she float again when the tide comes in, or does it all goes pear shaped?
