I plan to take our 1.35m draught long keeler into Ryde at Springs to dry out along the harbour wall and stay overnight, which will involve getting up in the night to tend the lines when we float again and when we dry out again, before leaving on the next day's high tide.

Any advice on entering Ryde and drying out on the wall? I've only ever dried out before on scrubbing piles. I've got four large fenders but no fender-boards - does the HM supply these, like at Yarmouth, or can I safely use the fenders rigged horizontally to 'roll' in pairs as on piles?

(Also Mrs Babylon wants to know if she'll be able to get a shower there?)

Thanks

When I was there a few weeks ago, the harbour master had fenderboards to lend out. There is also a shower for harbour users.

Drying on wall at Ryde

Confirm the fender boards provided at Ryde. Make sure that you do moor on the wall, not the pontoons which dry out and will leave you high and dry ! Plenty of slack in your lines and springs, but not a great drop from HW about 2-3 ft below your keel IIRC. If its dry and windy there'll be plenty of the fine sand blown across your deck at HW from the beach!!
Can recommend the Chinese restaurant opposite the little boating lake!!

It is many years since I dried out there in a Fulmar. The consistency of the bottom varied so it ended up very bows down. Was safe but uncomfortable. Perhaps the HM knows where is best to go?

I am a regular visitor to Ryde -but only the pontoons.

I know many people that do take the wall though. Fender boards are available from the harbour office which is open at least 3 hours either side of HW.

The range of tide is pretty low, but you could weight your shore lines with buckets full of water to keep her in - I know quite a few people who do this.

Tip for the entrance channel though:
The port side is where the sands are - don't cut the corner on the way in. Approach from half a mile off before lining up with the channel. The buoys are staggered.

The starboard side is just the same depth in or out of the channel. The turn into the entrance marginally favours the port side. Come in on the flood in case you find the botton before you reach the wall.

Eateries:
The Marine - pub on the front east of the marina - good food.
The Simeon - out of the marina, across the grass and main road, through the short path past the fountain, take the road ahead passing the chippy (good chippy) and take the left into Simeon Road. Down the end on the right, Steak and chips very good. LOUD live music on a Saturday.
Ryde Tandoori - really good half way up Union Street - 10 mins. Ask Harbour Master.
