Hi Guys,

Do you know what the drying height of the visitor moorings at Solva are?
I am trying to work out how late I can get onto the moorings next Monday.

Looking back at my notes from my two previous visits I get quite different numbers (aprox 1.5 and 3 meters above datum).

Cheers,
David.

I can only guess - our log is on the boat at Milford. My memory says we could only get on them a couple of hours either side of HW, so I'd go for your 3m figure, rather than your 1.5m figure. I say again, though, I'm far from certain. We draw 1.4m Fin keel.

You do know that you can wait just inside the harbour entrance in 'the pool' don't you? It's tight if there's more than one boat, but there is some shelter there.

I've also anchored overnight in a bay called Caerbwydi, fine in Northerlies, and just East of Ramsey Sound in Porthllysgi bay, which has more Shelter from East and West, if that's any help.

The answer is ... 2.5mtr over datum

Hi Guys,

I got into Solva (just!) at 12 Noon BST on Monday (20th Aug 2012), I got one mooring rope on the cleat and then grounded. I lifted off at about 16:45 GMT (17:45 BST) later in the afternoon.

According to my tide graph calcs at 11:00 GMT there was 3.7 over datum and as my boat draws 1.2 mtr, that gives 2.5 mtr over datum.

At 16:45 GMT the figures are very similar at 3.6 mtr, ie the drying height came out at 2.4 mtr.

So I now know I need at least 3.7mtr of tide to get into Solva and to the visitors moorings.
Some of the visitors moorings are a little shallower, so a little bit more water may be needed if the outer moorings were occupied.

David.

That's good to know, cheers.

The last time we were there, the harbour master, who was very friendly, told us we could always dry out against the wall if we let him know.
