A huge amount of rain got into the bilge - its 1/3 of the way up the engine block and oil was floating on the surface!
I've pumped the water out but how should I tackle the engine/gearbox?
I recognise that this is a SERIOUS problem that may need a lot of work to fix. But where to start..... None of the main electrics are involved, as far as I can see.
Anyone got experience of this sort of problem? Advice very gratefully accepted.

If you havent turned the engine over its not a major, you might have to dry out the starter motor if that got wet, drain the oil & refill
ditto gearbox if its got in through the vent pipe. Then start and warm through change engine oil and filter for luck and bobs you mothers brother.

Are you sure you have a problem? The oil on the water could be from old stuff just sitting waiting for some water to float on. What is the oil in the engine and gear box like? is there any emusification or other sign of water ingress? If not and the electrics did not get wet then I wonder if you have anything to worry about. Most of the engine and gearbox sould be sealed to stop oil getting out and therefore water getting in.

Hi,

Thinking about the the electrics, as its fresh water you should be ok BUT - I would get the starter off as quickly as you can and dry it out (strip it down preferably but either way a good blast of compressed air and straight into the airing cupboard for a couple of days or a hairdryer on sensible heat should do the trick).

The problem with anything with coils or windings is getting the damp out (I used to do this for a living!).

Good luck

Rob
