Driveshaft cord

Trying to figure out a use for Denso tape, I'm reminded of seeing short ( ~4" ) loops of cord around driveshafts in boaty ages past. These were impregnated in oil or grease - whatever was handy - and were seemingly used to keep the exposed section of driveshaft clean and corrosion-free.

Any memories? Any better explanations?

I have seen it being used on long shafts to balance/fine tune them.
