I would appreciate the accumulated wisdom of the BB on the subject of drinking water. My boat has two 25gallon tanks with a pressurised delivery system. I have always been wary of drinking from tjhis supply due to nervousness re age of water etc etc. and keep a 5 gallon jerrycan close by the galley specifically for drinking and cooking purposes which can be rinsed and refilled frequently to ensure always 'fresh'. Am I being overcautious? Can any of you recommend a treatment/refill regime that would avoid the need for the seperate tank? What about filters? Expect that this post will not get its fair share of banter but hopefully there will be some reliable guidance as well.....

we keep a four pack of 2l mineral water bottles under the stairs next to the galley for drinking. Personally, I drink anything, but SWMBO and the short people are of a more delicate persuasion...

Never had a problem.
The tank gets drained down in the winter and a quick flush through and then re-fill in the spring. - we don't drink much of it unless its boiled for tea etc. and use bottled water in the scotch.
I occassionally use the tablets (in the tank I mean !!).

I'm with you on that Graham; I'll drink anything but t'others want bottled stuff. Sooo, before this summers cruise I fitted a new all-singing fresh water filter to the cold water supply in the galley.

Displayed it to the onlooking crew with accompanying Ooohs and Aaahs (they don't get out much). Mrs A agreed that the water was much much better. Every one happy.

During the second week I noticed that she was filling the kettle, cooking etc from the HOT tap!!

ps the best way to drink Whisky is the way you like it. Just drink it.

We just use it as normal. The tanks never been emptied and thats 85 gallon. It also go's in the whiskey when the canada dry runs out. Mind you it dose seem to have an effect on wifes temper which is going worse and worser.

We all drink the tank water with no adverse effects. Tank holds 200 galls but is emptied on a more than frequent basis due to my many showers etc and that of the short persons (although they have to be bullied ) - I dont 'do' public showers ;-) But remind me when we all meet to tell you about the ladies showers in St Katharine's Dock on Millennium eve !!!

Re: the only thing

that should be put in whisky is more whisky. Or possibly ice, in the case of Balvenie Cask Strength (about 60% abv, and it shows...)

Rarely seem to drink water on the boat, all other alternatives VMB

Seriously, I'm with Byron, we drink the water from the tank (but od flush it thro with sterilising soln once a year and flush twice to clear the taste) and the little green aliens inside my eyeballs say I'm doing fine.

We always drink from ours, although we empty the tank out every 3 or 4 days if we are on board a lot and then refill. We never use any tablets but we did buy a water filter a little while ago for the galley area, only to find that HWMBO couldn't fit it in anywhere because it needed to be upright and there wasn't any room for it. DOH!

It\'s simple....

Friday night when you get there empty tank then refill with fresh. I reckon the water only starts to taste funny after it's been in there for a few days. Never done me any harm altho SWMBO refills kettle from the pontoon tap.

First - ensure you keep using the water regularly, in effect flushing it through.

Second - call Dave Street of Berthon Marina (Lymington - 01590 673312) and ask what the crystals were that he gave me to sterilise Play d'eau's water tank a couple of years ago.

Whatever they were, they were strong! And I had to promise to flush the tank six times before using the water for drinking....

After the treatment - no problems - sweet as a nut.

I do exactly the same as you. I have one of those collapsible water tanks, changed it earlier this year when I took the old one off cos it was leaking. The black gunge that came out when it was disturbed was disgusting. And that was after tank had been cleaned with tablets etc and flushed through several times.

Will always use seperate container for drinking. Why take the risk (as evidenced by mad posters on this BB who drink from their tanks!!)
