Once every now and then, the chance arises to dress a yacht in pretty coloured bits of cloth (often called 'flags').

What is the etiquette for dressing a boat?
What sort of flags may be used?
Club burgees, of which I have a collection, are they allowed?

This post is probably on the wrong forum, Oh well, never mind!

Basically it does not matter as long as it cannot be interpreted as a plain language signal ....

There is a recc'd sequence of flags if using Interco Flag's (signal set) ... but if you insert others - etc. I am sure that no-ones going to complain - unless some smarty-pants from the forums is around !!!

I have done it often - using my signal flag set ... taking flags at random out of the pockets ...

Even strung up Happy Birthday 21 for my ex-missus years ago at Club Regatta .... got a round opf applause for that ... she still bl..y moaned all day though !!!!

DRESSING SHIP

i) For national or local festivals, yachts when at anchor or berthed alongside may dress overall.

ii) The only flags to be used in ‘the dressing line’ are the International Code of Signals.

iii) The order of the flags on a single masted vessel are:

(a) From bow to mast head:

1. E, Q, n3, G, n8, Z, n4, W n6, P, n1, I, answering pendant, T, Y, B, X, 1st sub, H.

(b) From mast head to stern:

1. 3rd sub, D, F, 2nd sub, U, A, O, M, R, n2, J, n0, N, n9, K, n7, V, n5, L, C, S.

iv) For two masted vessels the line between the fore mast and the aft mast begins with Y and ends with O.

v) For National festivals an additional special ensign or the red ensign should be worn at the mast head or mast heads.. On the main mast the Ensign would be flown beside the Burgee

vi) Flag Officers do not fly a mast head ensign beside their Broad Pennant.

vii) The special ensigns of more than one club shall not be worn at the same time.

viii) It is incorrect to proceed under way whilst dressed overall, though the mast head ensigns may still be flown.

In addition to the suggestions already made. The RYA booklet C4 "Flags and Signals" is well worth the small amount it costs.

There are some fancy yachts in our marina flying fancy plastic bags, Waitrose M&S. Course these boats have a better quality of bird poo on them unlike those of us that have Liddl and Co-op bags. So if they have more than three bags do they constitute a signal and should they be in some order? /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
