They asked if they could use us for a training exercise - how exciting is that.

These are the guys that are currently on the BBC1 prog 'seaside rescue'.

I don't allow anybody to approach me from behind !!!!

They were landing while we were stationary (unusual as they normally prefer to do it on the move), and it was much more difficult to get on the bow than into the cockpit. I guess as it was a training exercise they wanted to make it as difficult as possible.

Isn't it amazing how you forget all the good VHF rules when you have to use the radio for real - 'over and out' says I - oh the shame.

Mind you the guy that was winched on board asked if I'd seen the telly episode last Wednesday when, in the closing scenes he was told he was a real hero and replied 'Just doin my job'. He said he had had untold stick since.

We had the same excitement several years ago when they came and held up a blackboard(chalkboard for the PCs) with CH16 on it. All went well and he enjoyed a cuppa and left like superman (whoose gone), we immediatly raised the sails and was almost knocked down from the prop wash.
Lesson learned............. use the engine until the big bird has gone away. /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

It's great fun isn't it! I've had similar experience a few times, and know others here have. Often seems to happen in winter month boating when they need the practice and not so many out, though similar requests often still happen in summer

Happened to us twice when we had our boat in the Solent. Second time, I had an argument with the chopper pilot trying to explain that perhaps it was'nt the brightest idea to land a bloke on the canvas canopy over the aft deck of my Broom but he still went ahead and lowered his bloke who bounced about on the canopy for a few seconds and then buggered off. If he'd have damaged it I would have sued Portland Coastguard /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

We had them once, buzzing just above us in the middle of no where, well middle of Bristol chanel and you cant get much further no where than that!. Staid there so long, I ran downstairs and dinged the coast guard to see what the hell they wanted. Apparently they were just lonely out there and were glad of the company. Anyway we waved back at them and they waved at us and that seemed to chear them up a bit.

Bloody wusses!! /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

They scared the absolute crap out of me once (in fact the time I visited you and LJS in Salcombe) Heading towards Weymouth in roughish conditions, when I thought my engine had screwed up. Horrible noise. Turned around expecting to see smoke and flames billowing, and there was WB following just off port stern.

Got a big wave off them, but then they've landed a winchman three times, so must think they are friends of mine by now!
