I am not familiar with the 2003, but on my MD22 I get nearly all oil out. However, my engine has a separate pipe for this. Also remember that if there is let's say 5 liter of oil in the engine, the 0,1 liter or so that is left is of no importance.
Yes, it's worked fine for years on my 2003, which is still running well! Now, if there was some way of getting the oil filter off without oil covering the front of the engine....

I cant get my pela tube down the separate pipe, so use the dipstick. get almost 6 litres out, which is the capacity, so guess it's OK.
Run the engine for a while beforehand to thin the oil, and leave the filler cap off whill pumping out.
My Perkins sump plug is at front and not so bad to get at ... so idea is to Pela pump it out ... and just before finish - plug out and let last remains take the crud out from bottom of sump ...
Tip for Pela ... I made up a second larger bore pipe for all bilge work .... (I couldn't find a cap to fit the Pela though ... another Forumite suggested using the blanking cap - excellent !) I now have a non-blocking large bore pipe that sucks up bilges, spills, clears fuel tank ... etc. as well as the thin bore for dipstick tube oil draining ...
I don't have a Volvo... my BMC T90 has a built-in pump which I use to get as much of the oil out as possible, then I turn acrobat and get the sump plug out. I can deal with any spill with a shallow tray and nappies.
The sump plug is magnetised and holds onto swarf.
Better out than in, said the flatulent bishop...
1) hold a plastic cup under the oil filter
2) with a pointed metal instrument or a nail:
2.a) punch a hole in the top of the oilf filter
2.b) punch a hole in the front of the oil filter
The oil will now drain from the oil filter into the cup. And yes the filter is ruined, but you were going to throw it out anyway.
Had a great tip from an engineer. Warm the engine to drain the oil, but don't remove the filter. Wait until the following day when it's cooled down and then remove filter
You should always run the engine to warm the oil before a oil change as this makes the oil flow better and easier to suck or drain out,H/S make sure it cools a bit before draining.My 2001 needs a change soon and i suck it up the dipstick tube with a pump thingy gets most but not all out.
to release the filter and unscrew, you might get a little run off of oil, but as long as you empty the sump first, and get a rag ready. you should get away it.
what i dont do is punch a screwdriver thru the filter, a really messy way of removing it...

They sometimes are difficult to fit onto the filter due to the close proximity of pipes bulkheads etc,i use the big screwdriver punched through method,it allways works,but remember the new filter needs to be screwed up only hand tight,so next time should unscrew by hand.
I have just serviced my 2003 using a Pela & the oil came out a treat(oil very warm)
I bought a new Pela this year as my old one was 8 years old.It was much better than last year.I only got just over 4 litres out & that is what my Service manual states as the capacity.Is 6 litres right? I use a chinese takeaway container under the oil filter which saves too much mess.
I really appreciate having the Pela ... bilges, fuel tank, oil ... sucks up all.
But shortly after buying it - the O-Ring that sits under the rubber cap - where you fit the pump unit - broke. So the unit wouldn't create a vacuum.
I looked at Pela web-site and sent a request about the item. While waiting - I sent one of my inspectors out with the broken O-Ring to see if he could find a replacement locally ... Sure enough about hour later he put on my desk a new O-Ring ... at the princely sum of 25p.
Few days later I received from Canada (seems it's the home of Pela ...) a new O-Ring free of charge ....
