Got a new-to-me boat this spring with a VP DPH drive. It’s on the hard now, cleaned up for winter, and I just noticed some oil seeping out between the upper and lower casing. It seems to have happened after the haul-out, since there were no signs of oil in the water during the season, and the oil was clean when I checked—no sign of water contamination.

From what I understand, this can happen as the drive ages, and it looks like a fairly straightforward DIY job. However, I’ve been trying to find a DPH workshop manual without any luck. I’d like to review the steps and decide whether it’s something I can tackle myself or should leave to a shop.

Does anyone know the proper procedure for resealing the unit or can point me to where I can find the workshop manual?

Any Volvo dealer should able to supply a manual.

Volvo Penta DPH-D, DPR-D, DPH-D1 Parts Manual

Sorry just noticed, only a parts manual

I've got the parts manual already and nothing available for DPH on YouTube, but I did find an AI-generated summary — though it’s inconsistent, as expected.

I’m specifically trying to find out:

  • Whether the new gasket and/or surfaces should be treated with any additional sealer or adhesive, assuming it should, what type. VOLVO PENTA 1161099 Sealant or LOCTITE MR 5923, maybe they are the same?
  • The required torque specifications for the bolts.
  • Whether there’s a specific procedure for reconnecting the upper and lower gear assemblies.

I've done pressure tests before and have the equipment.

The matung surfaces on the ypper and lower halves should have a thin coat of Volvo sealant 1161099, the gasket is dished and the dish should be down.
The torque specification is 55NM or 41 lbf. ft.
There is a splined tube that connects the upper and lower shafts, don’t forget to install it!
Also there is a bearing race in the upoer half which can fall out when you split the drive, no problem but make sure the shims behind it don’t get lost as this preloads the bearing in the lower half.
Looking at the drive from the rear the tightening sequence is,

Front
