I have been looking over the summer and am whitling down to 2 models to buy. they must be twin diesel, up to 70k, with a seperate forecabin and an aft cabin suitable for occasional guests / storage as we intend to take the boat ot the med next year for an extended honeymoon (6-8 months)

Whittled the list to a Fairline Targa 30/33 or Sunseeker Martinique36.
Anyone have any comments on the above? or suggest suitable alternatives that fit the criteria?

Also, I have eben approved for finance through Bank of Scotland and Lombard, any poreferences there? The rates are about the same. If Iwas to buy overseas would they still finance the boat? that way I save on Vat.

Advice, as always, gratefuly received.

They do in the Targa 30/33 which used to be acalled the 33. Its longer than the 30 so has the forecabin with a double bunk the a U dinette on the right opposite the galley with a small aft cabin in the rear.

You don't "save on VAT" VAT is still liable and you will need a Certificate to prove it has been paid. This can be from any EEC country but it must be paid.

Martinique is a brill boat, (I've got a 38, and the 36 is same layout inside) Byrons right about VAT, otherwise you pay when it's brought into UK. There is a 36 for sale at Moodys, got all the bells and whistles, think it's up for about £80K. It's been for sale for a while, so might be worth an offer.
good luck

Re: VAT, Maxum

Veery envious about 6/8 month honeymoon!

Dont understand how you save VAT, would be interested to hear more. You are looking at used boats right? In which case you would have to buy a non-vat paid boat, which at that size of boat would be rare, possibly ex bareboat charter? Might be hard to find a non-knackered one? And then you would have to keep it outside the EU to avoid VAT?

There's a very nice twin diesel Maxum 3000SCR mint condition being sold by BarryD hereabouts, photos on B1's gallery. Excellent photos in fact, dont you agree. Praps a bit smaller than you want? But nice boat

Misunderstanding,

I meant that Could I buy overseas, finance with BOS or Lombard and then sell overseas, it saves :

travelling through the canals there and back,
a 5k bill for overland transport
VAT Bill

Frankly, when we get back to the UK we wont have enough time to justify using the boat as at that point it may become a "toy", therefore may as well buy, use and sell overseas, then when we get the bug, perhaps buy something more suited to weekend cruising in the UK that wont cost as much.

sorry about the confusion as I was aware that i would have to pay VAT if the boat was brought into the UK, the question wasmainly based around whether or not it could still be financed.

I still don't understand how you're gonna avoid VAT in the country you'll be buying the boat if it is within the EU.

If it were that easy we'd all be buying boats in the med and using the vat amount to cover the first years mooring fees etc...have I missed something?

I just can't be arsed...

Re: VAT, Maxum

Ha Nice try JFM. Agreed great photos - but Obi asked for details on American Pie a while ago but never bothered to reply so I presumed it was not what he wanted

So you unscrew this, and put it safely here, then oopps...
All - IMHO, BTW, FWIW and NWGOI

Re: ask about flag

we used a french finance house, and this means they wat it french flagged. Likewise, finance in the UK may mean they want it british flagged. But of course the boat could be located anywhere in the world.
