I love the old writing style, and the self-deprecatory remarks such as when they avoided sinking one of his Majesty's cruisers. So many books showed evidence of good drawing skills in those days, such as those by Alker Tripp.

"Anywhere outside the swell gets at you; while the difficulties and dangers of getting in or out of the harbour, particularly the Western entrance are enough to condemn it as a haven of refuge."

Bit of a pointed jibe that.

The UK Government decided it needed some deepwater ports to keep an eye on the French and if they got sufficiently aggravated launch an invasion. Of course they did not like to state this openly so they decided to erect them billed as Ports of Refuge for distressed shipping.

Thus we got Portland, Alderney, Dover and St Catherine's Bay

Like many of the finest efforts of our legislature they were an unmitigated financial disaster and have never really been much good for anything - Dover excepted. The suggestion of shipping under sail going for any of them in survival conditions was always a comedy idea.

Alderney started falling down when half built, never got finished and was on the wrong side of the island. Portland never caught on for obvious reasons. St Catherines was built in the wrong place and silted up before the money ran out.

Doubtless this is what Mr Briscoe was taking a pot shot at.

Just received a copy of the book, much more in a similar vein to the extract from above, cost was £15.00 + postage from the editor of the Old Gaffers Log. Very highly recommended.
