Doug\'s SBS report.....with surprise pic!
Well had a good day at SBS today, thought I would share my observations......
Parked in the West Quay Multi story, arrived at about 11, no problems or q's. Left at 4, cost a fiver.
Why do Sunseeker have all the billboard adverts along the roads in, when so few of us could actually afford one of their boats? I mean, if you have the cash,, and are keen, you probably dont need the advertising.
No shortage of punters on the Bavaria/Legend Stands. Lots of sold boats, the 31 was sold. According to someone I know who used to sell them and who I had a nice chat with, the admins have dumped all the opal stock on the market at half price.....
Very few sub 10/10.5 meter boats. A explosion in 38' plus....
In fact I was keen to look at 9-10 meter yachts, but I could only see 7 , and only 2 that I would have been interested in , the Elan 31, and the Salder 29.
The Southerly 46 is the most stunning boat I have seen in a long long time.
The new 32 will be at both of the london shows, Northshore will be at both.
The new Hanse320/350 looks a bit of a mess, no chart table to speak of.
Talking of chart tables, they seem to be getting tiny, even the new SO 36 had a tiny chart table.
The boat I would have bought if I had the cash, the Finngulf 33, spot on. Decent bloke selling it as well. Approachable, Keen. Really loved the boat, proper yacht.
Most exciting boat, that 35foot trimaran with the folding hulls, very nice, nice guys on the boat, very keen and genuine, excellent build quality, VERY expensive!! (Circa 200k for 35 feet) but capable of 25knots...
The new x34 looks good, why does the sale guy have to ask me a test question to see If Im worthy of talking to??
(So which boats have you been looking at? Whaddaya think of the Hanse?) errrrrr.
Sadler guys are dead keen, and worth stopping in at, the 29 looks great.
According to the Sadler guy, there will be a new Sadler 34 18 months from now......
Passed the YBW stand, loads of cake, so I thought I would stop by later, when I went back...no more cake. Had to have possibly the worst burger ever....guy was handling the food with bare hands, and then handling the cash...... Not really big on the hygene thing.
Cool things... Very tidy little servo pendulem self steering by Neptune, 4 different size, so suitable for even a small boat, about £1800 all in.
Neat amphibious rib, with big wheels that fold down hydraulically, motors in the rear wheels drive it along at abou6 mph.
and saw the RM 880, had the pleasure of meeting Stretch, heres a pic of him with a anchor that he was testing....Comments of his choice always appreciated no doubt..(Look on the foredeck)
Geat looking boat, and he has more string to pull.....
Code zero self furling,
Cutter rig
Running backstays...
blimey.
Anyways, got myself one of those shaky hose things from the man, and a nice little teak cockpit table from the stand almost adjacent to the shaky hose guy, Worth visiting them for the crack, nice guys.
General observation, there appears from my perspective a growing nulabour gap between the havs and havnots, you can either spend £5ok for a new legend/bav 31, or £90-100k for the Sadler/Southerly (The new Salder 34 will apparently be around £130 all in.) Their doesnt really appear to be much in between.
Anyways, one of the more enjoyable shows for me. Even if I missed the cake.
