Hi all, I am new to boating and am in the process of sprucing up my 17ft Dory made of GRP, the boat has been neglected a bit and I have removed the added on wind sheild and roof contraption leaving quite a few small holes in the roof and the sides.

As a rule, should I flush fill these and if so whats recomended as a filler.

Or should I buy assorted rubber grommets and plug them leaving any future owner an easy task of refitting the roof, wind cheater thingy.

I intend to paint the boat all white again so the black grommets would stand out a bit unless they took on some white paint also. Any ideas regarding painting her, does it require a priming coat then finish, or can a single coat be applied?

Regards Alan in Arbroath

G'day Alan,

It will help if can you give us a bit more information, some detail will get you the right answers to your questions.

Like, has been painted before.
Painting GRP and painting over existing paint are two very different jobs,
What sort of money are you looking to spend and is the boat worth it.
No point in giving you advice that will cost more than the boat is worth, so is this a tidy up or a major project.

How large are the holes and what position are they in and are they all in GRP.
Depending on the location and material repairing holes is anything from minor fill to a major layup and fairing.

Avagoodweekend......

Hi there, I will have a good look at the boat and try to suss if its been painted before. Its an older boat so it probably has.

The holes are high up on the roof and on the sides high up, no bigger than 1.25 inches and most much smaller. All holes are in the fiberglass material.

The boat painting will be a spruce up rather than a renovation.
Its getting rewired next week as its all been let to run down a bit.

Its 17feet long Dory with a catherdral hull, sepearate cuddy area with option to sleep inside out the rain. Its has a 40HP electric start Yamaha petrol outboard. So its a nice wee first boat while I get my experience up a bit but it will probably get sold early spring and we will get something a bit bigger.

I lived in Burleigh Waters on the Gold Coast between 1994 and 1995. Nice weather and loads to do.

Regards Alan

Hi Alan, a while back I found the following website which has a good number of people fixing similar craft at iboats.com:
web page
Personally, I'd stick the grommets in and enjoy using it!
