Dorset sea search

The Beeb are reporting that the crew were taken off the vessel in Jan 2011 after she took on water. Let's hope for a happy ending... the water's cold and the currents there are swift:(:(

Why on earth were they not carrying a liferaft? The weather has not been bad - a 500 quid coastal liferaft would have kept them alive!

they were; they have to. You can see one in the BBC picture. To be unable to deploy a LR indicates some form of catastrophic event. (I think it has to be an auto-release one as well.)

:(:(:(:(

were they carrying any form of 'automatic' distress beacon device?

either a 'personal' one or a 'ship mounted' one! :(

were they wearing any form of 'life vest' or 'bouyancy aid' ?

any of the above would certainly speeded up a mounted rescue attempt ! and earlier locating!

Please forgive me hypothesizing about an awful tragedy, but I can't help being reminded of the 'Ouzo' accident; in that position they were close to the shipping lane and indeed a submarine exercise zone.

I suppose with the boats' chequered history there may have been a reluctance to put a call out, but the only way I can really imagine her going so quickly would be a collision...

Or getting their gear caught by, erm, something moving underwater, and being dragged down?

It said on the local news that she was a crabbing boat, so I'd think less gear in the water, compared to a trawler ?

However I and sailing club chums have had periscopes etc go past close by in that area, and I was very surprised when talking to submariners on this forum to discover that for all the sensors on modern submarines, they have trouble detecting small boats.

If she was hit by something though, I'd think a ship more likely, and it would certainly be unlikely to be as well run as a submarine...

There is the point that her gear may have snagged on an obstacle on the seabed and pulled her over, there are lots of wrecks there.
