don\'t you just hate it...

when you spend a fortune on some electronic kit and before you've learned how to use it there's something better and cheaper on the market?

i spent £1600 on an icom ssb, another £500 on their vhf and matching dsc controller. at this year's show they have a combined vhf/ssb/dsc and all in a box half the size of my original ssb and costing the same as the ssb alone!

now if only satcom technology would go the same way!

Re: Bound to

Look at the current cost of a fixed DSC VHF now less than £200 including the aerial and no 'add ons' to buy.

As it becomes more cost effective for Big Brother to increase satelite coverage (for unspecified purposes) then the costs of the commercial spin offs will decrease.

I fear that even the simple act of switching on a mobile phone will soon enable a host of organisations to track not just where you are but also what you even had for breakfast that morning.

Re: Bound to

Ian, THEY can trace your approx position if you use a mobile phone.
Cars will soon be fitted with a position finder so you can be charged if you take your car out of the garage. I was under some illusion that road tax was a payment for using the roads? evidently its a tax for having a car.
THEY wanted to charge us yachties light dues, but in the Crouch we pay a harbour plaque fee which goes towards the upkeep of the river buoys so would we have to pay twice. Its all getting very silly and expensive we will be charged for the wind next.
Sorry about the moaning i'm suffering from SAD.
All the best

Re: Bound to

And while we're at it, how am I supposed to fund a 10% increase in council tax on a 1.9% increase in pension (and that was over 15 months).

Only answer of course is to sell up and sail. (post has to be sailing related). .... but how long can I afford the insurance............

No Trevor. You couldn't suffer SAD today! It's brilliant sun and icy cold....Great!
Edited by VMALLOWS on 12/01/2003 23:01 (server time).
