Don't quite understand this

I'm not sure I would have set off from Falmouth with the forecast gales over the weekend, or if I'd got as far as Ilfracombe, I'd have stayed put. Perhaps I'm a woose. Interesting to see the comment about fog at Hartland point.
 
Call me a woos as well.I wouldnt have ventured anywhere with the forecast as it was.

Sounds like he may have had flat batteries resulting in the loss of engine and VHF .With the sails damaged he was starting to run out of options.
 
Why have so much sail out in 35 mph winds? Looks like full genoa and full mizzen. Reefing line chafed through?
It looks a fairly capable yacht. Heading more or less down wind I'd have thought a well rolled genoa and maybe a reefed mizzen for balance.
