Have just started reading "The strange last voyage of Donald Crowhurst". At this stage of the book, it seems as if he was doomed from before he even started.
Sounds a bit like my copy of Oyster River.
Parents ordered it to arrive for my birthday nearly a month later and they have just got an email saying that it will be at least another 4 weeks I wait in hope /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.....
I have little sympathy for the man. His bogus position reports forced the other competitor with a Tri in the race to push it so hard that it broke up near the finish. The skipper of that boat was an ex submariner using the race to try to clear the demons left by the war out of his head.
I have heard that RKJ tried to give the prize money to his widow but she could not accept.
Agree about having no sympathy for him, but if i recall correctly from reading "A voyage for Madmen", Mrs C did accept the loot from RKJ and a year later was living off the dole.
Used to know his son, taught him to dive, didn't know at the time he was son of Donald, he was a ordinary nice guy. Still I guess this has no bearing on the original story.
