Whilst returning from a pleasant sail last weekend I was proceeding North up the Marchwood channel at the top of Southampton Water.....when the Donald Redford (of Hythe Pier bisection fame) appears off my starboard quarter - overtaking.

It was on a vary fine angle to me - cutting across my bows. It came on...and on ...and on with no regard whatsoever for my vessel. Eventually we were squeezed between it and the yellow Marchwood buoy with feet to spare on either side. I was not concerned about a collision but it clearly was taking no action whatsoever.

All I can say is "watch out - there be a Jonah aboard yon devil ship!"

Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I am under the impression that a bye law for Southampton water gives right of way of commercial vessels over pleasure surpassing coll regs?

The Harbour Bylaws say "The master of a small vessel which is not confined to the fairway shall not make use of the fairway so as to obstruct other vessels which can navigate only within the fairway". But I'd have thought that this would be tempered by the fact that:

1) The bylaws also say that nobody should navigate "without due care and caution".

2) The DR was overtaking and should have been exercising caution by virtue of this in any event?

3) Whatever the regs say, this sounds to me like thoroughly bad seamanship and inconsiderate behaviour. Would it really have caused them much grief to have given him a bit more space?

....or perhaps I'm very old fashioned. /forums/images/icons/smile.gif

Re: Time to CHIRP

On the subject of CHIRPS, aviation magazines print the accident investigation reports each month, along with a selection of informative, and educational CHIRPS, usually 'self grassing up types' i.e with people admiting their own mistakes and comments on the lessons learned - all of which are very informative and only take up 1 or 2 pages in a mag. Perhaps this is something useful for YM to consider incorporating? although i'm not sure how many MAIB reports or CHIRPS are raised each month.

Re: Time to CHIRP

Not a bad idea at all. In fact, the YM Confessional page was a copy of the flying mags' 'self-grassing' page. Also, when there is an important MAIB report, we do tend to give it good coverage - the recent radar assisted collision between a yacht and a large ship being a case in point.
