I think one solution would be for moderators to have to approve the creation of a new user.
It would cause some delays at weekends, which is unfortunate, and would be more work for them, but would be better than the current Wild West state of affairs.
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
Good point.
I don't know if any 'real' forumites have moderator powers but it would be helpful if half a dozen of the regulars had powers to remove blatant spamming posts immediately without waiting for the ybw team to notice.
It doesn't work that way. Bizarrely this is about the only forum on the net which doesn't default to "latest post first".
So for the vast majority of users, even if posts below the spam are replied to, they won't move up.
Been mentioned many times but IPC just don't seem to be able to see the benefits (possibly because it makes it easy for "difficult" posts to be lost as they'll soon "drop off the page" and die).
Trouble is, it also means interesting and popular threads go the same way, and there's no point adding to a thread a week later as it won't be seen by most, often meaning multiple threads on the same subject.

Funnily enough, you were someone that I thought would be suitable. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I do understand your point but I think we all recognise this sort of very blatant multi-posting spam which could ruin these forums as opposed to the slightly less irritating blatant advertising posts (usually marine) which can wait for the ybw team.
This sort of moderation works on Tacticat web site where some regular players have the power to boot off other players who are very offensive or try to spoil the game for the rest of the sailors. They seem to use their powers very sparingly and wisely.
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
Er - yes it does! Check your display options in your profile (Click on (ab)User Options under "Welcome <insert your name>") and then on Display Preferences - there is a radio box to select creation or last post date .... it defaults to last post date ... so you must have changed it at some point without realising.
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
I think its daft that the default view isnt "latest post first" - as presumably what most people want to see is the new posts going onto the forum?
I use another couple of forums and in both cases there are a number of members (as opposed to employees) who are moderators. However their powers are limited to deleting posts and members so that they can sort out the spammers.
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
YOU CAN CHOOSE WHETHER TO HAVE THE POSTS LISTED BY CREATION DATE OR LAST POST DATE.
IT IS ALL IN YOUR USER OPTIONS
Jeeze ... how many times do you have to say it? You can work out how to raise sails, get your gin palace in and out of tight marina berths operate the most complex marine electronics but can't actually look through a simple forum preference system - even with instructions ....
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
You're MIISSING THE POINT!
Default setting is not "latest post replied thread first", so sure, I can change my settings and I can reply to a post a week old. But hardly anyone will see it as THE DEFAULT SETTING IS DATE ORDER OF ORIGINAL POST. So that post of five pages back will still be five pages back for most users.
Thanks for the capital letters and sarcasm though, very nice.
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
Erm ... I'm NOT Missing the Point ... the default appears to be last post as neither of my radial buttons are selected (therefore I have not adjusted it ...) ... if you log out and have a look you will see that it the forums are show in order of Last Post - another indication that it must be the DEFAULT.
FWIW: My area of expertise is in computing and specifically in dynamic web pages (including forums) ...
Your welcome to the capital letters and the sarcasm .... but please mention the bold bits as well! ... btw the sarcasm was really aimed at Ancient Mariner ... as he obviously took no notice of my post whatsoever ...
I think your post footer is applying to your posts on this thread ... /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
Yup, same here. Never changed anything, and it's not last post first, it's in order of original threads. Not helpful.
At the end of the day though, even having it selectable is a bit of a waste of time, because if you've got different people using differnet systems then you've got some who will see an older post replied to as it'll bring it back to the top for them, some who wont, some who will start a new thread even if an existing thread exists as it's the only way to "bring it to the top" etc etc.
Whole thing is a bit of a mess either way.
Should be threads replied to at the top in date order of when theyr'e replied to. That way you log in and you see all the recent replies all ordered at the top rather than searching through pages and pages in case someone has replied to a fortnight old thread.
As I've said before, every other successful Internet forum seems to work this way and it does exactly that, works.
This doesn't and it's a shame the Powers the Be cannot see that.
But then I guess it's a site run (and in the main run well) by magazine people, not Internet people so maybe that's why...

And if what you say is true it sounds as if it is read by lots of people without the savvy to set things up to their own taste. The option is there for personal preference, you don't have to use the default options if you don't like them.
Why does everyone want everything done for them these days?
Re: Don’t look at or reply to spammers and they will drop off the bott
Most if not all, other forums I use default to last posted to thread first - as this does not. I think though the main problem might be the NUMBER of threads posted in a period - these forums are very popular! Nothing can or should be done about it however - just the way it is. For myself, I try to limit postings, even so, at least one I started would not have been posted had I first used the search option.
