Could be an air lock - check there's water in the tank. Does water come out of taps?

Could be dirt in the pump stopping valves from sealing properly, so pressure doesn't build up.

....and could even be a leak and pumping into the bilge - until the tank has emptied and then not switching off.. Not so far fetched as it happened on our boat when it was pumping out through a leak in the footpump that was plumbed inline. 20 odd gallons swishing about the saloon floor.

First thought - we're sinking!!!! Then, what about making a cup of tea??? Get priorities right ;-)

Should have switched the pump off after use and before going sailing. My fault.

The symptoms show that the system is losing pressure. Assuming you havent got a leaky tap or a pipe leak then nthe answer is in the pump. Every time this has happened to me, it has been some dirt or a hair in the one way valve in the pump itself. Nothing required but a clean out.

I had exactly the same thing, it was in fact a tired pump, I replaced it with a "computerised" one that senses rather than relying on a pressure switch. Jabisco and expensive and of course spent half a day running around searching for plumbing fittings.

Happens to me every year. Then I look in the bilge, find it full of water and remember I have forgotten two things:
To close the calorifier drain valve and
To re-connect the pipe at the top of the calorifier that I disconnected to let air in to empty it.

I filled the system yesterday and remembered both for once!

To pump should turn off unless you have a leak or the pressure switch is faulty.
