My designed set up is for 3x 85ah.

I'm thinking of replacing with one 225ah.

Apart from a small drop in capacity what are the pitfalls of just having one battery.

The obvious disadvantage is the sheer weight.

Cost? 85Ahr batteries are produced in vast quantities for the caravan market
and are usually the most cost effective in terms of £ per AHr.

You must have some reason for thinking of going that route ? .... maybe an available source of 225 AHr batteries

I thought 3 x 85ah would roughly the same as 1 x 225ah i.e. about 60kg

He's not planning on installing 3 x 225ah unless I've read the post wrong

Agree with the point about cost though with 85ah being around £70 and a Vetus 225ah being around £550

do you lift all 3 85Ah at the same time
with 3 in one goes like Homers beer ( Duff) you can isolate it & carry on

I see what you mean about weight now, although for £500 I'd expect the bloke who sold it to fit it Mind you I'm sure two people could manage 60kg between them every 5 years or so (or could find someone who could)

Cost and safety factor of having 3 batteries much more important in my view

We have 4 x 140 ah, speaking for myself I would not want to carry around anything much bigger than those. Perhaps 2 x110ah would be another option. But as some one else has said I would look at cost per ah of the batteries availlable

Most 85 amp hour batteries last for a number of years, but some will give up the ghost before others. If you buy a single 225 mp lump and one cell goes after a few years you are chucking away £550. If one 85 amp hour battery loses a cell you are only chucking away £70.

In 2004, whilst doing up a boat I found a 75 amp hour battery by the marina skip. It had been thrown away. It was charged up and worked Ok, and is still starting the engine 7 years later. No idea of how old it is!

The most cost effective deep cycle batteries tend to be the 6v ones so I would look to see if 2x 6v 200Ahr batteries would suit. This also solves the weight problem, although if my wife and I can manage 12v 200Ahr batteries (3 of them) from shore into the dingy and on to the boat then most couples should not have too many problems.

That is an amazing price. I have 3 x 170amp similar batteries, which, earlier this year, cost a lot more than this company's quoted £139.

We managed the 170amp batteries by dinghy, and into place, but I wouldn't have liked to have tried that with the even bigger and heavier 225 ones

I've also got 2 x 105ah batteries from Battery Megastore, good price which includes next day delivery. Replaced 2 x lorry 110ah batteries which only lasted about 3 years.
