I was sailing back from Cowes to Litlehampton yesterday an hour or so ahead of a friend who had never sailed in the Solent before.

I was in near the Winner where I was joined by two dolphins (?) - 10ft long - and they stayed for 5 minutes or so. (I'm told the size meant the were dolphins and not porpoises)

Totally confused my friends when I told them to head for the Dolphin (they're new to sailing) to get through the submarine barrier! They had the luck to see the pair themselves.

Nice to know that there are still a few around.

It's great when you see them isn't it.

We see plenty on the Devon and Cornwall coasts. We also see basking sharks. The most amazing sight (2) I have seen was when sailing between Penzance and the Scillies when I saw two (separate sightings) Sun fish. They are huge. At first I thought I had seen a fin of a Basking shark but when I got close I could't believe it.

I always keep a camera on board for this kind of occasion.

Regards.

Peter.
