Thanks to those of you who contacted me with advice. Unfotunately the fact that I am technically challenged meant that I didin't see your suggestions until after I had come up with a tempoary solution (these have a habit of being permanent if they work!).

In the end I cut a hole in a plastic tank to take the fuel tap. I made up a plastic washer and fitted that on the inside of the tank, sealed it and secured the lot with a nut (on the inside). It seems to have worked OK. No leaks and I can pull and push the tap and it all stays to gether. I suspect that I will have to fork out and get a steel tank made a some point. That's another one for the list!
