While we were at St Helier Marine today with new puppy there was a sign saying no dogs, so asked the marina guy what happens if you turn up with a dog on board - bearing in mind that Jersey is within the UK and not subject to Pet's Passports etc. He said that there are no dogs allowed on pontoons, so if you come from UK or even another Jersey/ Guernsey harbour, you are only allowed to moor on outside holding pontoons and keep the animal below decks, not taking it ashore at all! This seems pretty ridiculous, as if you are a marina berth holder and want to take your dog on the boat there doesn't seem to be a way round it, also people from UK must have serious problems with this?
We knew we couldn't take her to France but assumed that trips to Guernsey (where apparentley they have the same restrictions) would be OK. Has anyone ever turned up at a Channel Isles port with a dog, and what happened?

If you think that's bad you should try Ramsgate. The people in the marina told me people living overlooking it ring them and tell them if they see a dog in the marina.

We have taken our dog to Alderney. No boat allowed to moor alongside us in Braye (because of the dog) and the dog can't use the ferry service to shore. However dog is allowed to shore providing it is ex UK and you take it in your dinghy. Believe Jersey stricter than Guernsey in respect of dogs.

Just a quick update - spoke to Peter Wilson the Marinas & Moorings Manager for Jersey who many of you may have met at the Boat Show. He says the marina staff are mistaken, and that dogs are allowed on the holding pontoon (no. 5 berth - next to the lifeboat) They may be walked ashore and also loaded onto boats from that pontoon and many local boatowners drive down the old ferry ramp and load up their boats from there - dogs included!
We intend to go there for the night of 8th May so that we have a prime position on 9th May to watch the 60th Anniversary Celebrations of the Liberation - what's the odds on an official visit from a marina guy telling us to keep the dog below decks?

A worthwhile point, where does Gibralter fit in all this?

Entered Gibraltar with dog in August, from Canaries, Madeira and Cadiz. I asked about dog, who was sitting next to me in the port authority office and they said it is OK, with no inspection of pets passport.

Don't know about Jersey, but Guernsey differentiates between dogs. Dogs from the UK and CI are landable. Those that have visited the Continent are not allowed on land and the boat will not be allowed alongside a land-connected pontoon. Confess I don't know about the pontoons in the Pool.

CI not in UK, not in EU. Statements including the phrase 'Channel Islands' and also the phrase 'British Isles' are always controversial, and are best avoided if you have something to say. The point is, noone can agree what 'British Isles' means. Anymore than what 'British' means.

Here is the official Guernsey line on dogs, etc. Note that even if you come from the UK, you may NOT enter the marina with an animal on board.

"The landing of animals from vessels arriving in Guernsey directly or indirectly from elsewhere other than the United Kingdom, the Republic of Ireland, the Isle of Man, Jersey or the other islands of the Bailiwick is strictly prohibited. Any animal on board any such vessel in harbour in the Bailiwick or at anchor or moored in the territorial waters adjacent thereto must remain securely confined with an enclosed part of the vessel from which it cannot escape. Any such animal found ashore or not confined on the vessel will be detained and may be subject to six months' quarantine or destroyed and the Master of the vessel prosecuted. Unless express permission is granted by a Customs Officer, no vessel with an animal on board may moor alongside a pontoon or quay. Under no circumstances will any vessel irrespective of its last port of call be permitted to enter the marinas with any animal aboard."

Thanks for that. It does appear to be consistent with the quotation I posted inasmuch as your vessel was not allowed to enter the marina, and the preceding no-no's relate to vessels not coming from Great Britain, Ireland, or the Channel Islands.
I am assuming you DID arrive from one of those?
But it is interesting that you were allowed to dinghy your dog ashore: that is not readily deduceable from the quotation.

I meet with the Deputy Harbourmaster in a couple of weeks or so, and will raise the subject with him.
