How many times have you quietly scanned some threads to find that an individual is asking for information about some thing that you just happen to have stacks of info., and can answer their concerns?
You then offer it, perhaps asking them to email you?

And hear....... nothing...........ever

Not just here, but in some other forums too.....or am I wearing the wrong soap?

Does it happen to you? :ambivalence

I'm probably guilty of seeking advice, reading the replies, and then going off to act on it rather than remembering to thank those who contributed. So, erm, sorry...

I do try and post a thank you, but sometimes people continue to offer advice/solutions after that, and it is possible that they might feel put out that I did not post further thank yous?

If so I must say sorry to them.

No it just hit me, that several people on sailing forums and others?? had asked for info on something; you offer to send all the docs or reports or info they seek (it's not often I can do this!!!!) and then....................nothing. Even if not required anymore, it would be nice to know wasappenin??
Well...I think so........mumble mumble

It's just basic forum etiquette, say thank you & feedback what happened - did it work or was there a further problem. Far too many people are simply on the take, but sooner or later the good guys will stop helping them.

On an ever-so-slightly parallel track, there is a feature available through vBulletin Solutions ( the providers of this and many/most other forum mechanisms ) which encourages one easily to say thanks. Like 'giving a smile', it is self-sustaining.... :encouragement:

Have a look here: http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?387632-Thanks and, should you agree, post something to the mods to tell them that WE are ready for a more courteous YBW.com, and that they should step up to the plate.....

Me too. But you can't keep checking back over your old posts forever.

Much the same when you sell something, i know they have it due the the tracker. Its just bad manners not to acknowledge safe receipt

Laurie,

I know what you mean; quite often I have scanned things I happen to have the info' on and posted it, to get no reply - recent ones were the Foiler 21 and Kelpie, now rare boats whose owners were begging for details - I happened to have the details of the boats so scanned and posted them, no thanks for that, nothing...a simple courtesy goes a long way.

That about sums it up, unfortunately.

I once responded to a request for help and offered to email someone some software that was no longer available (all above board). He could read my email but couldn't download the attachment for some reason and asked if I could try sending it again, which I did. Still no joy at his end so I said I would upload it to a server for him to download from there. The server log said it had been downloaded but I never heard from him again. Some people...

He still posts on here intermittently, usually when he needs something. I don't reply.

Agree in full.

What this forum needs is a "Thanked" button, down there to the South East with the "Post Quick Reply", "Go Advanced", and "Cancel". Most other forums have this feature.

In the past i have sent PDF information on engines sent old electronic charts and even free tickets to the boat show...... Some said thanks others have not even had the courtesy to say they have received stuff.

Will it prevent me from doing so in the future...... NO ! Why, because I'm too old to think everybody has the same inbuilt manners that I was taught.

Don't get upset over it.

Tom.

Ps, if I haven't said thanks to somebody reading this...... Well, ...... Thanks

Even worse, over the years I have offered a number of small items free for forumites who can make use of them. More often than not I have not even had an acknowledgement that they have arrived which would be nice haven taken the time to package up and cart off to the PO; often promises to pay postage are not kept. Poor forum manners/etiquette by more than a few!

I send out lots of docs to various forumites, often just from a PM request, to date I have always had a thank you.

I frequently offer info searchers PDF files from my library and in return request they make a donation to the RNLI or Hamble Lifeboat. In my experience the vast majority do acknowledge, and I don't let those that do not put me off.
