Undergoing a major revamp of my electronics and wondered whether handheld GPS will work through slopey Corniche screen to enable laptop software to work?

To be safe I am combining this with new chart plotter too (well I deserve a few presents....)

Mine does in the 37, might be worth buying one of the cheapy external aerials from ebay (about £15 if you shop around) so that you can locate it right in the middle of the screen.

Other thing you may wish to consider is one of the GPS with USB port to plug direct into the Laptop leaving the handheld GPS separate. This gives you a backup if one fails.
I think these are about $99 (yep, dollars)

Christmas Greetings to you, Joanne and the girls!

yes they do, but best if near the window, some sets pick up better than others, Garmin GPS 12 is excellent as a plug in to equipment, they have a 12v and computer link cable available for them and keeps the signal better than some more expencive ones. Best if you can secure it somehow, with the top pointing at a window. I use this plugged in to my VHF/DSC handheld.

My Garmin 12 works fine in my Botnia Targa wheelhouse but not at all sitting at home by the french windows.

I wish however I'd paid a bit more for the 12XL model which is 12V and easier for wiring in to power etc.

My Garmin 72 works ace in the car - sit on the dash - cheapest sat nav going.

also you can find out the OS Grid ref from Multimap and enter the "waypoint" directly and acurately directly into the GPS.

Great for finding places - within 100yds

Yes, as others have said. The antennae for most in car satnav are on the rear parcel shelf. If you fit a re-emitter (eg from Maplin) you dont even need to put it near a window

So you will be visiting the Transas stand at LBS as well then./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

The Software that Clive is recommending is obviously the one to go for.

So I might just see you there./forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Cheers

Alistair..

Hi Nick. Yes my handheld works fine in the P315.

How's your smoking? In a bid to get ours sorted out we have been tweaking the fuel flow. In fact it has gone so well that we have blown up one of the engines which is now out of the boat and sitting on the engineer's bench with a big hole in one of the cylinders!

Don't you just love boats?

My Garmin GPS12 works fine at 38000 feet, through double glazing, so I guess your's should work fine through your Corniche windscreen.

Max speed on mine (so far) is 625mph - What's yours?

The emitter is a device, about the size and thickness of a ping-
pong paddle

attenuation.

REF; Hoo and Questor.

Do you both take your Gps onto planes when you go away?
Are you allowed to use them?
Or do you keep it out of site up your jumper or something?

Bizzare...

Keeping it up your jumper makes it difficult to see.

No one has ever said anything to me about using it, except on one occasion when a member of the crew thought it was a mobile phone. Can't be very different to people using portable CD players / DVD players, and it is of course only a receiver, exactly like the one they have on the flight deck.

I am no electronics expert, but i would have thought if you weren't allowed to use phone on board then the same would apply to GPS, Don't the both use satalites?

Dunno.
