On the offchance that there was actually some sense in the original post, I tried again to see his point of view just in case. No good, still think the man's a pillock, and his later posts have reinforced that opinion, but I did at least work out why, if I was the yacht, the situation wouldn't cause me any real concern.
When the ship is 1 nm from the point of impact then, using Daka's assumption that tide only affects sailing boats, I will be 1.5 cables from the same point. If I then turn through 180deg and run, by the time the ship gets to the ex-impact point, I will be 5 cables away from it. A miss by half a mile is fine on my risk register.
Probably wouldn't have waited that long as I would have known for some time of the course conflict, would have read the name on the bow (7x50 binoculars) and called on Ch16 at, say, 3nm range, and with no answer would probably have turned about 3 minutes (giving a whole mile clearance) earlier.
