Remember this picture and the prattle that went on around it?

On the offchance that there was actually some sense in the original post, I tried again to see his point of view just in case. No good, still think the man's a pillock, and his later posts have reinforced that opinion, but I did at least work out why, if I was the yacht, the situation wouldn't cause me any real concern.

When the ship is 1 nm from the point of impact then, using Daka's assumption that tide only affects sailing boats, I will be 1.5 cables from the same point. If I then turn through 180deg and run, by the time the ship gets to the ex-impact point, I will be 5 cables away from it. A miss by half a mile is fine on my risk register.

Probably wouldn't have waited that long as I would have known for some time of the course conflict, would have read the name on the bow (7x50 binoculars) and called on Ch16 at, say, 3nm range, and with no answer would probably have turned about 3 minutes (giving a whole mile clearance) earlier.

So QED - the original post is bollocks.

I am still trying to get my head round it. On the yacht entering the circle the ship is 7 nm away, which with eyeball nav is still a fair way, and could pass either side of the circle, with me in the middle, due to small angle.
If I remember this thread started with the PoB report, and her change in course of 22 degrees. In which case, taking the diagram, with you on the edge, 20 min from centre, and ship on the edge, 3 min from the centre. You are reasonably safe with the best part of 1/2 nm clearance. But the ship does a 22 degree turn to port at the edge of the circle, which would put it on a near collision course with you.

Where do you go, you have 3 minutes ?

Brian

What's the point in dragging this up again, personally insulting another forum member and then using colourful language in a public forum? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

Ahh, well. That's the consequence of winding people up, isn't it? I trust you will learn your lesson - or at least stay out of the kitchen if you don't like the heat.

Trouble makers shouldn't expect sympathy so don't bother to winge on here!!!

The argument I promulgated was a refutation of Daka's erroneous conclusions which were based on his explanatory diagram not on the PoB report. As I thought I made clear, I would prefer to take avoiding action earlier than 1 nm (when the ship's intentions were reasonably clear but a lot, lot later than at 7 miles).

However, if ship changes course at 1 nm and I have been foolish enough to delay my manouevre until then, it will pass west of the circle centre by 4 cables (tan22) and I'd be over a cable clear and cursing the ship with some very bad thoughts.
However, if the ship is being steered by a malignant entity determined to run me down, the later I leave the evasive moves, the better (within reason).

The question for me is when do I assume that the give-way vessel is not going to? - and that is closer to 1 than 7 nm. After all he's had another 6 nm (20 minutes) to make his course change by then.

Just keep yer head down dude, itll pass over soon.. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I did not "personally insult" him - I stated an opinion with which you are at liberty to disagree. In simple terms I did not write "He is a pillock" (an insult) but "(I) still think the man's a pillock" (my opinion).

As to dragging it up again - the same erroneous conclusion keeps being repeated on other posts and some people may believe it. Using Daka's original diagram and numbers, the yacht can clear the ship by 1 nm if it changes course when the ship is at ~2 nm range.

"Colourful" language? I've already suggested he might be Irish!

(Must type faster and not disappear for yet another turkey sandwich while composing )

Don't know what is going on but are you trying to insult someone without actually spelling it out?Kind of like he's Irish so it doesn't matter what he says or maybe, he's a Scot so he is probably spending his time drinking, fighting and arguing so no point in listening to him?

Obviously lots! Daka & Dyflin have been deliberately trying to wind up users of this forum in the mistaken belief that Scuttlebut is "for sailors only" when they are MoBo'ers. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Unfortunately they don't seem to have read the forum description which says something like "for cruising chat". As users I'm sure they will be very welcome, but deliberately trying to wind people up has not endeared them to me at least.

Any clearer now?

I don't know whether pillock is insulting or not but this is Chambers' definition;
pillock noun, Brit slang a stupid or foolish person.
ETYMOLOGY: 1960s; 16c in N Eng dialect, meaning 'penis': from Norwegian dialect pillicock penis.
