Hi,
I'm contemplating buying a dufour 1800 25ft yacht, unfortunately it doesn't have a trailer and I'm thinking of building one to suit (if I go ahead)
Does anyone know how much one weighs, all I can find on tinternet is the displacement (1800kg) and ballast (750kg)

Errr...displacement is the weight of the boat. However, published displacement figures can't take account of additional equipment fitted, etc.

I do not understand why you couldn't simply Google to get the answer of 4038 lbs???
Wake up at the back there!!

Re: Total weight of a Dufour 1800 (or sim 25ft boat)

Actually I did just that but the point of these forums is to ask questions isn't it, and gain knowledge from those that have it?

Thanks for clearing that up, I always thought displacement was the amount of water that was, well, displaced (with 1m3 of water being 1000kg) so this includes the weight of ballast?

Yes the displacement is the total weight of the boat, including ballast.

Basically when the weight of water displaced is equal to the weight of boat it floats! A principle discovered ages ago by some old Greek ( not Phil the Greek, someone way back in history) and I thought learnt by every school kid at about age 11.

However as already indicated the figures quoted by manufacturers do not include any of the gear that boats in service carry.

Not a simple statistic like that - you're just cluttering up the place.
However. if you want advice about design and build of a trailer someone will be along in a minute . . .

Re: Total weight of a Dufour 1800 (or sim 25ft boat)

quoted displacement you get on the plaque in your boat can be misleading as I believe it is based upon a formula used for larger boats and is more to do with your hull size and load carrying capacity than your real displacement - which is obviously how much you weigh..... well.... dependent on whether you are in salt water or not etc etc.....

[/ QUOTE ]You're just confusing the guy! The figure on a plaque you're referring to is the tonnage for registered boats, it's never called displacement. The Dufour 1800 has a quoted displacement of 1800kg - this is why it's called the "1800", and it's the weight of the basic boat. Add say 200kg for bits and bobs, and the total weight is unlikely to exceed 2000kg.

Must be great being born with knowledge about everything!!!

Most folk are happy to help on the forum but there are some who will winge about anything. Just ignore them.

Do you have the lift keel version? If so would the boat go on a SuperRollacoaster type trailer? Might be cheaper buying one of those rather than building.

Have you thought of building a "dolley", a type of cradle on wheel that can be used to launch, and then winching it onto a flatbed trailer to move. You can hire flatbeds for around £65 per day. Saves the problem of getting road trailer wheels in the water.

With boat at 1800kg and say contents 200kg total load would be 2000kg. A trailer to carry that might well weigh 600-700kg giving 2700kg total gross weight. You will need a 4X4 to tow it as it is over the legal limit by miles for a car.

Ha ha, yes sorry, was a bit naughty - more a bit of trivia really. I never realised that the Tonnage' was different until..... ah, there lies another story.
A reasonable question asked by the original poster though and apologies if I confused him/her, just thought it might be interesting!

You joke! There really is no excuse for posting factual questions that Google can answer without cluttering up forum space.
Nothing to do with personal knowledge - just where to look.
Like right 'n left before crossing the road, not after.

Not only can you access Yachtsnet archives for this sort of information but the original poster has admitted to wasting our time!

Can we move on please? Like how does that Dufour compare with a Tomahawk, Cobra 750 or Hustler 25.5 - to name but a few.
We wouldn't like to find that Sean had bought a pup, would we?

Deleted a couple of posts because they contravene rules on personal abuse in the forums. But I would like to say that seanf is right, this forum is for asking questions to seek advice and experience from other boaters. There are many ways of gathering information so if you have a suggestion please provide it, but don't assume that just because you know the answers others will.
