Just got a super bargain on a brand new still in the box motor from a boat dealer for only $400. it is a couple of years old as he forgot he had it new 2.3hp go for $1200 plus. I bought engine oil of course but after reading the manual I was wondering do they ship them from the factory with oil in the gearbox? Hmmm have to walk down 140 steps and back up from my boatshed to find out. Hmmm even if it had oil would it be any good as I am not sure how old the motor is The manual date says 2009

Anyone got any advise?

engine oil will not go out of date( its only a lawn mower engine anyway). i would have thought it would have been factory run prior to dispatch so the gear box ought to have oil.
take a bung out to check, if no oil EP90 should do the trick.

I would not have even considered that it did not. No reason why not. Its sealed and cannot leak.

What does the on line manual say!

It might be wise to check though.

Clean new oil will not deteriorate.

Guys thanks for the advise as I don't have to worry about bad oil. Manual says Change both oils after 10 hours of initial running then every 6 months or 50 hours. So I suppose I will have to get some any way. Dang another trip to the shop and less time boating well at least it is raining and I have the deadly man flue.

Cheers

Tim

I used to work at an outboard motor shop, and all new engines from Yamaha and Mercury came with a bottle of oil to fill the engine gearbox/sump. That was one of my jobs, to do the PDI.

After factory running, the oil is drained for transport.

I would suspect that Honda ship without oil. Check with the dipstick, with the engine upright.

Note, that the 4stroke engine MUST be laid on the correct side only, to prevent the oil draining out.
