Have you done the mod to the securing pin between the shaft and the spade, cause it needs more than just the standard nyloc nut. A castellated nut with a split pin is a strong recommend from a chap who lost his boat due to the spade and the shaft coming apart.

Nope.

But a Spade S 60 has done us fine around the Solent/Chi on a 2.2T Hunter Horizon 27 TK.(Err, 8.15m mono)

I've rafted in Chi with a friend on his Nic45 (12T?) with both of us on his spade S 100, and AFAIK they are the next best thing to a (4x the weight) fisherman's...

If you're not on rock, then I'd suggest going for it.

thanks mcframe, the S60 just fits in the locker, but seems big to me for "normal" cruising.
S40 blade area is bigger than the current danforth, which holds no prob, IF it sets /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

I used to have an aluminium spade on my 7 tonne catamaran. It failed catastrophically in the Canaries. We anchored in a small bay where the bottom was a mixture of rock and sand. The anchor hooked under a bit of rock and destroyed itself. The conditions where very benign at the time with very little load on the anchor. The shaft on the ali spade was hollow!!! it split down the whole length. When I took the issue up with Spade they said the anchor was undersized. They were consulted during the purchase and had recommended the size I purchased. They did replace the anchor with a steel one for free but that not the point. The ali anchor in my opinion is not to be trusted. We were previuosly very pleased with the holding though. We used it very successfully in sandy bottoms and we still use the steel one as our main anchor. Cant fault it.
