Does an outboard leg get hot when flushing?

Yamaha 5HP packed up whilst motoring, it had water streaming out of the outlet so not blocked and probably not overheating so I think it was a pinched fuel pipe. I have just been flushing the engine which srarts and rubs fine with water coming out of it BUT the leg got quite warm, after 30 secs or so with stream coming off the wet leg. It was about halfway in the water (big bucket) over the cavitation plate. Is this normal. Thanks. Sorry in a rush with typing...

On my yamaha malta, water flowing out is before its been round the engine. All it shows is that the water pump is working. I take the thermosat cover off and see whether water appears when I try starting the engine. This still doesn't cover all the water channels in the cylinder head.

It was all a bit frantic at the time with interruptions but thinking about it now it was probably exhaust fumes coming up and the leg would get warm quickly from the exhaust passing down through it!?

Most of the cooling water should be pumped into the exhaust at the top of the leg which is a large cavity type muffler. Hence leg might get warm simply because it is not under water (ocean on the outside) but perhaps of more concern is that water path is blocked and not getting to exhaust and leg. Usually you will see signs of water in exhaust steam etc.
Perhaps your motor stopage was from over heat even though tell tale water flow appears ok.
In the case of my old Johnson 6 if I remove the pump /gearbox at bottom of leg it exposes the tube taking water from pump to head. If I push a garden hose onto this, if all is well I get water out of the tell tale but lots of water down the leg tube where exhaust would be. ol'will
