I'm about to purchase a sea-going second hand power boat and wondered if it needed the nautical equivalent to an MOT or safety certificate?

I know boats used on British Waterways need safety certificates and that many insurance companies require a survey before insuring a boat over 20 years old. But is there a coastal waters equivalent I should be aware of?

No, there is a no formal requirement.

You seem to have a long way to go to understand what is involved with buying and running a boat.

Might I suggest you obtain a copy of the RYA book on buying a boat which will cover all the basics. The RNLI also do a check list for safety items.

You should have a survey on any boat you buy because the surveyor will not only point out the faults to help you avoid buying a dog but will also advise on suitability of boat and equipment for your intended use.

Stop! Arrange for a surveyor to climb over the boat before parting with any more dosh! It'll cost you £300 or so but it could save you thousands.

At the very least you'll have the peace of mind provided by knowing what needs fixing on the boat - which can, of course, be used in your favour when used to re-negotiate the sale price being asked by the vendor.

We have mot in Spain, basically a stealth tax ,creater of paperwork and riddled with minor corruption, and organized by the government but implemented by the private sector,a really good idea along with their certificates as per RYA but absolute rubbish!
